Crossbow Candy Canes
Crossbow Candy Canes
The crossbow, although often thought of as used by the people of middle ages and crusades, was actually created by the Chinese and used by the Greeks in the 4th century BCE.
The Greek name for the crossbow was the gastraphetes, or “Belly Bow”. This is because warriors held the end then of the bow against their stomach in order to absorb the force of the weapon’s kick back.
This large piece of equipment might be found in Ares arsenal, along with many other weapons.
In the ancient world, crossbows were NOT the weapon of choice. Most armies would have traditional bowmen. The crossbow was remodeled to be more practical and became more popular in the crusades.
To add a little bit of Christmas spirit to this craft, I decided to create these decorative crossbows out of candy canes, licorice and jelly beans. And, yes you can eat them, if you use edible glue or make icing!
Although this takes a little longer, it is fun and tasty. Adult supervision may be required when using the oven.
SUPPLIES:
- Candy Canes
- Wilton Dab-N-Hold Edible Adhesive
- Jelly Beans
- Pull Apart Twizzlers
- Mini Pretzel Sticks
- Mini-Marshmallows
Candy Cane Crossbow Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 275 degrees fahrenheit.
- Put candy canes on wax or parchment paper on a pan.
- Put in the oven for 5-10 minutes. Make sure to keep an eye on the candy canes as they can melt quickly and you may end up with just a pile of minty flavored goo.
- While the candy canes are melting, peel the pull and peel Twizzlers until you have enough ropes for your desired number of gastrophetes.
- You can also create arrows while you wait. Place the mini marshmallows on the end of the pretzel.
- Remove candy canes from the oven.
- Have an adult help bend the candy canes while they are still warm. The candy canes will cool quickly, so work fast!
- The candy canes will now have a flat edge from lying in the pan. Glue two candy canes together along the flat edge. You can use edible glue or icing to hold them together if you want to eat them later. If you simply want to display the crossbows, you can also use a glue gun.
- After the candy canes are dry,(about 30 minutes if you use the edible glue) attach the ropes by pushing them on the candy cane. I did not need any glue for this, but you can add more glue to hole them in place if you want. Place the jellybeans near the center of the candy cane cross bow and add your arrows.
Enjoy your delicious crossbow.
